What is the correct time to make the transition for kids from eyeglasses to lens?

Parents usually are concerned about their kids and ask the optometrists about the correct time when their kids can make the transition from eyeglasses to lens. The answer is, it completely depends on the child as to whether they consider it comfortable or not. Contact lenses offer specific advantage over other vision correction eyewear for kids. More than age, the major consideration lies on maturity that decides whether or not the contact lenses are an apt choice for kids. Medically speaking, children’s eyes can bear lenses from a young age. Even small babies with eye conditions are treated with lenses. More importantly according to a research, about 90 per cent near-sighted kids between the age bar of 8 to 11 years faced no difficulty placing or removing one-day disposable lens.

Contact Lens For Kids

When do you know your child is mature enough to wear lens?

For this, you will need to assess whether your child is able to insert, remove and take care of the contact lenses without the help of the parents. One indication to detect the maturity level of the kids is to witness their action and grok whether they have reached the level of maturity. If your child requires constant reminders to do daily work and also adhere poor grooming habits then that indicates your child isn’t mature enough to wear contact lenses. Regardless of all ages, a conscience child is the best candidate who can wear contact lenses.

Benefits of wearing contact lenses

There exist a number of benefits that indicate wearing of lenses are better suited than eyeglasses for the visual condition and lifestyle. The advantages include:

1) Wearing contact lenses while playing sports:

While playing games, running or engaging in physical sports, glasses usually tend to get knocked or trip off due to excessive perspiration. Eyeglasses limit a child’s vision and prohibit the child to perform well in any physical sport. Wearing contact lenses can resolve all the problems. Moreover, tinted contacts can allow your child to view the ball easily.

For sports, the ideal choice for a child’s prolific vision must be soft contact lenses. Soft contact lenses do not carry a risk of getting dislodged or knocked out during a game.

2) Way to control near-sightedness:

Children with myopia, rigid gas permeable contact lenses are considered to be a superior choice. Durable gas permeable lenses typically offer great vision than soft lenses.

Orthokeratology often referred as ortho-k, is a modified technique for fitting gas permeable lenses to temporarily reverse myopia. The ortho k contact lenses are worn at night while sleeping and removed early morning. By this process, the near-sighted kids would be able to clearly view everything without wearing lenses the entire day.

3) To Boost Self-Confidence with Contact Lenses

Many times, children get self-conscious with their appearance in eyeglasses. In this case, lenses become an excellent way that could boost your child’s self-confidence and esteem. Participation in school along with other co-curriculum activities generally ameliorate when children make the switch from eyeglasses to lenses.

After the scorching heat of the past few months the rains are surely making you feel at ease both mentally and physically. We bet you’ve also spend quite a few days getting drenched in the rain, just for fun. But for your eyes, monsoons can become a time for several eye problems starting from irritated eyes to redness and swollen eyelids. But there are simple ways to help your eyes stay healthier during the monsoons; all you need to do is to follow these simple steps:

  • Wash Your Eyes with Water: If your eyes are feeling itchy or you have accidentally rubbed your eyes with dirty hands, go and splash some water on your eyes. Cold water will help soothe the eyes and also wash away the allergens (if any). Follow this technique every day when you wake up to remove all the dirt and debris from your eyes that can create eye problems.
  • Keep Yourself Alert For Any Eye problems : Whether you feel that your eyes are red and are not turning normal, or you have watery eyes, the best solution would be to visit an Eyecare professional and ask him to take a look at it. Most of the time, you eyes might heal on their own but if you feel that your eyes are hurting or are creating discomfort beyond your tolerance level, consult an eye specialist.

  • Keep your eyeglasses clean: People who need spectacles or moreimportantly, need vision correction require wear eyeglasses all the time. For people wearing eyeglasses it can become a problem for them as dust and allergens can get stuck on their eyeglasses and thus provide allergic reactions for your eyes. The best way to keep your eyes safe is to use a specially formulated eyeglasses lens cleaner to wipe your glasses twice a day or if you don’t have a lens cleaning solution nearby, you can also use running water to wash your lenses.
  • Use Contact Lenses with care: Contact lenses and especially soft contact lenses, when worn without proper precaution can create problems for your eyes. If you wear monthly, weekly or yearly contacts keep care that your lenses are stored in only fresh solution. And for double safety, change your contact lens case every six months so that no bacteria can make it their breeding ground. Also use a cleaning lens solution for cleaning your lenses every night prior to storage. Many doctors suggest using Eyeglasses more than lenses for rainy seasons.
  • If you wear contacts, stay away from Rain water: Rain water or water bodies like the bathtub or the local pool can be really damaging for your eyes. Contact lens wearers are suggested to keep away from water bodies and rain water. For rainy days, resort to the humble eyeglasses. If you’re still thinking about your appearance being hampered by bulky eyeframes, resort to lighter titanium eyeframes or better still half rimmed or rimless eyeframes that provide a better aesthetic appeal.

So, these are the top tips for you to keep your eyes safe and healthy in Monsoons. The best tips for healthy eyes would be to keep your dirty hands away from your eyes , stay away from allergens and wear contact lenses carefully.

Implantable lenses for Severe Myopic Patients http://blog.gkboptical.com/implantable-lenses-for-severe-myopic-patients/ http://blog.gkboptical.com/implantable-lenses-for-severe-myopic-patients/#respond Tue, 24 May 2016 12:15:43 +0000 http://blog.gkboptical.com/?p=1094 Continue reading "Implantable lenses for Severe Myopic Patients"

]]>
Have you been suffering from vision problems? If you have moderate or severe myopia that stops you from following everyday works. For severely myopic patients, not wearing glasses mean not being able to see at all, whatever the distance may be. Not only do severely nearsighted people rely on their glasses, but they constantly need them to see.

Many people solved their vision problem with laser eye treatments but having a thin corneas or are severely myopic are not able to get their eyes treated with LASIK. For this purpose the popularity of Implantable lenses has been increasing. Many people are looking up to implantable lenses as the best way to achieve better eyesight. There are two types of lenses available for this procedure.

The first ones is The Verisyse Phaktic Intraocular Lens (IOL) , which is made with plastic. This lens is attached to the front of the iris. Ideal participants for the implants should be above 21 years with a stable vision and a refraction change of less than .5 diopters in six months. The ideal candidate for the IOL implantation should have a nearsightedness range from -5 diopters to -20 diopters. It is usually not foldable which means it requires a larger incision. It is also closer to the inner surface of the cornea which means it can increase the risk of corneal damage.

The second one is the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens. The concept of Implantable Lenses is made of polymer substances that are similar to collagen. These lenses are safe and effective. These lenses are made with collamer which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Unlike the IOL lenses, these lenses are implanted behind the natural lens. These lenses are implanted for patients aged 21 to 45 years and with a refraction change with less than 0.5 diopters in a year. These lenses are available in two types, one that corrects myopia from -3 diopters to -16 diopters and another one that reduces myopia from -16 to -20 diopters. This lens is foldable and can be inserted through a fine incision and is placed close to the eye. Since the lens sits closer to the eye it can cause cataracts.

Now, there are ways in which you can help your vision and get improved vision. But since most types of severe nearsightedness is accompanied by astigmatism but none of these lenses treat astigmatism. There are a few phakic lenses which are known to treat myopia and astigmatism both .

How many times did you wish you could get rid of those ugly spectacles and enjoy your spectacle free look? Then, contact lenses are one of the best ways to achieve a natural clean look without losing the vision correction.

Contact lenses are available in multiple variants and are suitable for most individuals, and their vision needs. Whether you’re a sports person or a retired person, contact lenses are perfect for you. All you need is the knowledge to take proper care of your contact lenses so that you can enjoy them without stressing.

How to Wear and Remove Contact Lenses:

Wearing and removing contact lenses are quite tricky and it might take you a few tries before you get the hang of it. But once learnt you can do it easily and without thinking twice. Here are a few simple tips to keep your first time contact lens wearing experience pleasant.

  • First get your eyes checked by a trained eye specialist and consult whether you are a good candidate for contact lenses. Though contacts suit most people, it’s best to be sure before you invest in pricey contacts.
  • For people who need vision correction the whole day, then contacts can act as a good option? But choose one with high water content and according to your prescribed type. Some of you might be prescribed to wear Gas Permeable contacts while some may be advised to wear soft contacts.
  • Avoid cosmetic lenses, and try to wear contacts made especially for your vision problem. Choose from brands like Alcon, Bausch & Lomb and Johnson & Johnson.
  • For first time users trim your nails and make sure you wash your hands with an unscented soap and water and let it air dry.
  • Then take out the contacts from its case and place it on your palm and use contact lens solution to moisten it. Then take the lens on your right hand index finger and hold your upper eyelid with your left hand.
  • Looking into the mirror use your ring and little finger to hold your lower eyelid down so that you can get an unobstructed view of the eyes. Now place the lens on your eyes and move your eyes quickly so that the lens settles into the right place.
  • Keep blinking quickly to produce tears for the lens to get placed successfully. And repeat on the other eye in the same manner. Don’t rub your eyes and use a bit of eye drops to calm the eyes and reduce the redness.

Taking care of your Contact Lenses after wearing:

For lenses that have a wearing time of more than a day, you will need to store them in special containers and disinfect them so that they don’t get contaminated. Here are some quick tips to avoid problems like infections and eye discomfort with long wearing lenses.

  • Always remove and wear lenses with clean hands and use lens solutions to moisten lenses prior to wearing.
  • Don’t over wear lenses, lenses come with a wear time and extended wearing the lens even after the suggested wear time will create problems for your eyes. Always keep a second pair at hand and throw away the lens as soon as the prescribed wear time is exhausted.
  • Always change your lens solution every day, and change your lens case every six months to avoid any infections.
  • Always use multipurpose lens solutions to clean lenses. Lens cleaning removes dust, dirt, proteins and bacteria from lenses and keeps them safe for wearing.
  • Don’t sleep with your lenses on, and alternate between the spectacles and lenses to avoid long term lens wearing problems like lack of oxygen supply to your eyes, changes in the thickness and shape of the cornea, formation of micro cysts and vision loss. Also possible eye problems include swelling of the cornea, dry eyes, inflammation, allergic reaction, infections etc.

So, be a smart contact lens wearer and take proper care of your contacts. Follow these tips and get the maximum use out of your contact lenses.

How Computer Glasses Work – An Overview http://blog.gkboptical.com/how-computer-glasses-work-an-overview/ http://blog.gkboptical.com/how-computer-glasses-work-an-overview/#respond Thu, 24 Mar 2016 11:00:53 +0000 http://blog.gkboptical.com/?p=1020 Continue reading "How Computer Glasses Work – An Overview"

]]>
Computer glasses are special glasses that are designed to provide the eyes comfortable vision while working on digital devices like laptops and desktops. Advancement of technology has made computers and laptops a part of our daily life and has become inevitable at our workstations too.

Computer glasses are mostly designed to eliminate the harsh lights emitted from the backlit screens used in digital devices such as desktops, laptops, tabs and mobile phones. Every day while we are busy at working on the digital screens or mobiles we don’t feel that we’re causing discomfort for our eyes. Eyes are really active organs which constantly work to provide us the clearest vision and give our brains the information to work properly.

When we work on digital screens we force our eyes to readjust focus on what’s in front constantly. When we shift from pictures to text our eyes quickly adjust focus to keep the text in focus. Our eyes also keep adjusting the focus while we shift between the keyboard and screen. Also improper lighting can aggravate the problem.

The main problem for people working on digital devices for extended period is the aftereffects and eye problems faced while working. The most common symptoms of eye problem resulting from use of computers and digital devices are known as Computer Vision Syndrome or CVS.

The main problems experienced in CVS headaches after using digital devices, blurry vision, neck pain , eye strain, eye redness, fatigue, dry eyes, irritation in the eyes, vertigo or dizziness, double vision, polyopia and problems in refocusing the eyes.

The scary fact is that National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has shared their findings that about 90% users, who spend 3+ hours before a computer, will face some symptoms of CVS. One of the main problems faced during using a digital device is the reflections and excessive blue-violet lights. Also when we read our eyes blink fewer times, causing straining in our eyes and also causing dry eyes. So, it’s really important that one uses some kind of eye protection to reduce the eye problems associated with computer vision syndrome.

The Best way to reduce eye problems and increase your chances of keeping your eyes unaffected from the harsh lights from computer screens, computer glasses are the best solutions. Computer glasses are really useful to keep eyes more relaxed and feeling easy while you work on the computer. These glasses are specially tinted to reduce the amount of light passing to your eyes which reduces the eye fatigue. Also computer glasses come with an anti glare coating which is said to reduce the unnecessary reflections and block excessive lights, also causing eyes to feel more relaxed.

Computer glasses are formulated to block and reduce the amount of light that enters our eyes. Blue light focuses in front of the retina and forces our eyes to constantly shift it’s focus to keep the object/ text/ image in front in focus. This makes it tough for our eyes to keep up and causes fatigue. So, wearing a specially crafted computer glass eliminates the constant need to keep focusing and reduces fatigue.

So if you’re spending more than three hours in-front of a computer or digital screen opt for computer glasses and reduce your eye straining and fatigue.

Facts about Astigmatism and Toric Lenses http://blog.gkboptical.com/facts-about-astigmatism-and-toric-lenses/ http://blog.gkboptical.com/facts-about-astigmatism-and-toric-lenses/#respond Fri, 01 Jan 2016 06:00:34 +0000 http://blog.gkboptical.com/?p=835 Continue reading "Facts about Astigmatism and Toric Lenses"

]]>
Astigmatism is , similar to nearsightedness or farsightedness, a refractive error. A refraction or refractive error is when there is an error in focusing of light by the eye. Usually light focuses on a single point on the retina to produce clear pictures but in an eye affected by astigmatism light does not focus on a single focusing point on the retina. In eyes affected by astigmatism, light may get focused on multiple points , creating blurry vision.

Astigmatism and Toric Lenses

Treat

Let’s see what Astigmatism is how you can see betetr if you have Astigmatism with Toric Lenses .

The Symptoms of Astigmatism:

Instead of having difficulty or blurriness in near or distance vision, the symptoms of Astigmatism include a certain amount of blurred or distorted vision at all distances. People affected with astigmatism might have to squint to see better or eye strain after prolonged visual tasks. Also headaches and eye straining are common problems due to astigmatism.

Astigmatism Cause :

Human cornea should be symmetrical but when one of it’s meridian is more curved than the other, astigmatism can occur. Also the lens inside the cornea can cause astigmatism. Here are the different types of astigmatism and the causes.

Myopic Astigmatism :

When one or both the principal meridians of the eye are nearsighted and the two meridians have different degrees of myopia .

Hyperopic Astigmatism:

One or both the principal meridians of the eye are farsighted and the two meridians have different degrees of hyperopia.

Mixed Astigmatism :

One of the principal meridians is farsighted and the other is nearsighted .

How Can one Use Toric Lenses To Treat Astigmatism:

Contact lenses

Astigmatism is not a disease, and it can be treated with Visual correctors like Glasses and Contact lenses. For permanent visual corrections LASIK can also be used as well as surgery . Contact lenses are a good choice for vision care for Astigmatism as it’s easy to use, and gives natural vision without altering your looks. Here’s how Toric lenses from Astigmatism work.
The shape of a Toric contact lens creates different refractive, or focusing, powers on the vertical and horizontal orientations on it’s surface. The refractive power is increased or decreased as the lens moves.

Through the different refractive powers along the horizontal and vertical orientations, Toric lenses can help with astigmatism as it offers different amounts of refractive correction at different orientations.

There are many Toric Lenses available from various brands. You can buy Toric Contact lenses for Astigmatism from GKB Opticals and experience the comfort and easy vision correction.

Contact Lenses 101 & Caring For Them http://blog.gkboptical.com/contact-lenses-101-caring-for-them/ http://blog.gkboptical.com/contact-lenses-101-caring-for-them/#comments Fri, 27 Nov 2015 09:53:44 +0000 http://blog.gkboptical.com/?p=788 Continue reading "Contact Lenses 101 & Caring For Them"

]]>
Contact lenses have become quite popular today and many people are choosing them over their regular spectacles for daily use. One of the main reasons why contact lenses have become popular is that they are easy to use, comfortable and moreover, great for the wearer’s appearance. Believe it or not, spectacles do add a new dimension to the wearer’s appearance and contacts can give back that unadulterated look back to the wearer.

Contact Lens

But with so many variants available in the market, a prospective buyer might feel baffled at the choice. Many people are scared to put contacts in with many misconceptions that are formed due to less or no information about how a contact lens works. Here are some useful short facts to help a prospective buyer feel more confident while purchasing a new contacts or even the first contacts.

There are many types of Contact Lenses and they differ not only in the composition they are made of, but also in the tenure of their use, the comfort level and even appearance. Contacts are basically thin disk like shapes made out of silicone or special plastic. These disks are worn over the lens of our eyes and they float over the surface. These floating lenses move with our eyes and provide vision correction or add to the aesthetic appeal. They are also handy since there’s no added weight over your nose or temples/ears like when you’re wearing spectacles. These are unbreakable, scratch less vision corrector that do not fog up or break on impact. They are really great choice for daily spectacle wearers and with a bit of patience can become your daily vision corrector. Here are the different types of Contact Lenses Available:

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses : Made of plastic, these lenses permit oxygen to reach the eyes and are great for extended use. These come in yearly versions and are relatively easy to take care of. These lenses are worn over the centre of the eyes and are less flexible than soft contact lenses. These offer excellent vision and are great for most types of vision correction. But disadvantages include greater adaptation period than soft contacts , the chances of debris getting stuck under the lens and in between the eye and the lens. Also these can slip off from the centre of the lens easier than the other types of lenses.

Daily Wear Soft Contact Lenses: These lenses are made of soft flexible materials like plastic or silicone hydrogel that allows oxygen to pass through to the eyes. These contacts are relatively expensive and have to be disposed daily so there is no need for daily care. These lenses offer great comfort but can get damaged easily. The vision correction is not as great as RGP lenses and are available in tints, bifocals and are great for active people.

RigidGasPermeableContacts

Monthly Wear Contact Lenses: These are mostly made of plastic or soft silicone hydrogel that permits oxygen to reach the lens surface. With a minor adaptation period and the ability to wear them for 30 days, monthly lenses are one of the most popular lens variants. These are available in a wide range of prescription strengths and can be worn easily without a problem. Daily cleaning is necessary to keep the lens debris free and virus free.

Colored Contact Lenses: Colored contact lenses are soft contact lenses that alter the color of the iris and also may offer vision correction. These are mainly worn for aesthetic purposes and is usually available in Yearly, Monthly or daily versions.

For a first time contact lens wearer it’s essential to get their eyes checked properly and then decide upon the type of contact lenses they want to opt for. A medical practitioner can be the best person to ask all your questions regarding contact lens. There are also Single vision, bifocal, multi focal, toric and cosmetic lenses available for the wearers. If you’re a spectacle wearer and need vision correction all day, a yearly lens can be a great option. For those who want to keep their contacts debris and virus free and lessen your chances of eye problem you can choose monthly or best option would be to choose daily disposable lenses.

Disadvantages Of Wearing Contact Lenses :

The main disadvantages of wearing contact lenses on a daily basis is the increased chances of damaging the natural eye surface. Lenses can sometimes get contaminated by viruses and debris and can cause eye problems. Also dry eyes, itching, redness and watery eyes can be associated with the over-wearing of contact lenses. To enjoy the best vision, it’s necessary to take care of your lenses on a daily basis if you’re using any lenses except daily disposable lenses. Also sleeping with contact lenses on is also discouraged (Not if it was advised by a medical practitioner).

If optimal vision correction is your requirement, then choose RGP lenses that can offer the best vision correction, since daily and monthly lenses are not as efficient in vision correction.

Today we elaborate on how each performs its vision correcting duties and what are the principal benefits and hindrances of choosing each type.

Eyeglasses : The Benefits and The Drawbacks

EyeGLASSES (3)
We all know how eyeglasses were termed – ‘Boring’ and ‘Ugly’ during the 90’s and everyone felt self conscious wearing eyeglasses. The times have changed and now eyeglasses have made their mark as a stylish accessory as well. due to this reason, more and more designs are being made available . But eyeglasses are more than just to enhance your looks. They have a multitude of benefits they offer .

The Advantages :

  • Vision Correction: Vision Correction, is one of the topmost reasons of wearing spectacles or eyeglasses. Like most vision correctors, spectacles perform well to correct most types of vision problems like presbyopia, myopia , astigmatism and more. Usually farsightedness, nearsightedness etc are corrected. Many different types of spectacle lenses are available to tackle these vision problems.
  • Different looks Using Different Frames: You don’t need to stick to a single look these days, with so many different types of frames and designs, you can choose to look different each day . Choose from rimless frames that have no visible lines surrounding the lens, rimmed ones that have a full rim surrounding the lens, the semi rimmed ones have half rimmed design, usually surrounding the lens from the top and holding it in place.
  • Less Care , Easy To Carry : We all have enough on our hands, and could really need an easy to use and maintain vision corrector. If you’ve used contacts once or have seen anyone handling contacts, it requires care and more dedication towards cleaning the lenses pre and post wearing. Whereas for glasses very less care is needed.

The Disadvantages:

  • Bulky and Strenuous: Wearing a spectacle all the time can be stressful and feel bulky. It’s even more intense for people who have higher prescriptions. The spectacles sit on teh temples and bridge of the nose and create a bulky feeling. Also they are an added weight to carry around whole day
  • Limitations: Physical glasses or eyeglasses are limited vision correctors, they cannot fully cover your eyes and for people with both myopia and hyperopia, people who need bifocals . People who have astigmatism are also limited to certain amounts of vision correction .
  • Creates Problems During Activities: Active people, who indulge in high intensity activities feel eyeglasses as a hinderance. With eyeglasses, one cannot see properly without feeling limitations or experiencing self consciousness.

Contact Lenses : Benefits and Drawbacks

EyeGLASSES (2)

Contacts were till the last few years considered as a luxury item . Most people still believe contact lenses are too pricey or too dangerous. But contacts, when handled in the right way can be safe and great for those who require constant vision correction , especially active persons. Though they are a bit delicate and need care, contacts have their own advantages and disadvantages.

The Advantages:

  • Limitations free Vision: Contacts mean no disturbances in vision, like frames, limitations of lenses or other limitations. No need to feel limited while wearing specs during a high intensity activity.
