]]>
Eyes are the most important part of our sense organ. In spite of knowing this, we still potentially expose them to danger by going out without protection. Over time, the sun rays can damage our eyes and the surrounding skin that might lead to vision loss and other conditions like cataract and macular degeneration.

Daily Steps Against Sun Protection

Therefore, simple precautionary steps taken daily can keep your eyes safe.

Certain kinds of light from the sun can wreak havoc:

1) UVA & UVB light: UVA and UVB are powerful, invisible rays with wavelengths shorter than visible light. These are considered the most dangerous parts of sunlight. They can cause diseases like cataracts, eyelid cancer, and other skin cancers and can also lead to macular degeneration. Moreover, ultra violet rays can prematurely wrinkle and age the skin around your eyes.

2) HEV light (High Energy Visible Light) or Blue Light: HEV light or blue spectrum light is a potential contributor to cataracts and other eye maladies. Blue light can damage the retina over time that can lead to macular degeneration. The retina is the membrane where images are formed and passed on to the brain whereas macula is the region offering sharpest vision located near the center of the retina. Both the regions are highly sensitive and must be taken utmost care.

For proper protection, your sunglasses must offer the following:

1) Your sunglasses must offer the ability to block 99 to 100 percent UVA and UVB light. Also, your sunglasses must guard your eyes against HEV light.

2) You require a proper sunglass shielding the eyes, eyelids and the surrounding regions. The more your skin around your eyes is covered, the better it is. The ideal shield to protect your eyes is wraparound styles with comfortable, close fit and UV protective sunglasses.

3) Durability & impact resistance.

4) Use polarised lenses to eliminate the glare especially while driving. Continuing glare can lead to fatigue, headaches and migraines.

Daily Steps Against Sun Protection

5) Lastly, whenever outside, seek for sunglasses especially for the time span between 10 AM to 5 PM.

We at GKB Opticals offer justifiable prices on all branded sunglasses. Our special offers make it easy for you to avail the latest sunglass style. Which Lens Type To Opt For On Reaching Bifocal Age? http://blog.gkboptical.com/which-lens-type-to-opt-for-on-reaching-bifocal-age/ http://blog.gkboptical.com/which-lens-type-to-opt-for-on-reaching-bifocal-age/#respond Fri, 25 Aug 2017 08:39:25 +0000 http://blog.gkboptical.com/?p=1725 Continue reading "Which Lens Type To Opt For On Reaching Bifocal Age?"

]]>
Bifocal and multifocal contact lenses are specially designed to provide you with good vision on reaching 40s. At this age, you generally hold the reading material like newspaper or magazine farther from your eyes for clear vision. This particular condition is called “presbyopia”.

Bifocal & Multifocal Lens

Bifocal and multifocal contact lenses are available for both soft and rigid gas permeable varieties.

What is the difference between Bifocal and Multifocal Lenses?

Bifocal contact lens has 2 powers – one for viewing clearly from far off and the other one for viewing clearly up close. Whereas, multifocal contact lenses give you added benefits over eyeglasses allowing you to view at any direction – up, down and to the sides – with similar vision. Multifocal contact lenses include progressive eyeglass lenses exhibiting a range of powers for viewing clearly – distance, near and intermediate (arm’s length) vision. Also used as a catch all term for all lenses with more than one power, multifocal lenses contain two or more lens powers to view objects at all distance.

Classification of Multifocal Contact Lenses

On the basis of design, there are basically two types of multifocal contact lenses:

Concentric ring designs

Concentric ring design are bifocal lenses with either distance or near power in the centre of the lens with alternating rings of distance or near powers circumscribing it. In the most basic form, the concentric ring design is comprised of a central circular area of one power with a ring around an alternate power, similar to a bull’s – eye.

Aspheric designs

Aspheric design is referred to as a progressive style multifocal lens, with numerous powers blended across the lens surface. Few aspheric lenses have the distance power inbuilt in the centre of lens, whereas others have the near power in the centre.

How does Multifocal Contact Lens work & is it preferable?

Most people who try multifocal contact lenses need to make few compromises on wearing it. For instance, the distance vision with multifocal contact lenses may not seem clear enough or might cause trouble with glare at night or may also cause difficulty in viewing small prints.

In some cases, people with presbyopia prefer monovision or modified monovision. Both these fitting strategies utilize single vision lenses – that are, lenses with only one power instead of multifocals. In monovision, people wear single vision contact lens on one eye for distance vision and a single vision contact lens on the other eye that endows prescription for near vision. In modified monovision, people wear single vision distance lens on one eye and a multifocal contact lens on the other to assist them to view better up close.

Bifocal & Multifocal Lens

Therefore, to determine the best contact lenses for your vision on reaching bifocal age, GKB Opticals recommends you to consult an Ophthalmologist for better advice on which lens type to opt.

All About Orthokeratology http://blog.gkboptical.com/all-about-orthokeratology/ http://blog.gkboptical.com/all-about-orthokeratology/#respond Tue, 22 Aug 2017 06:30:40 +0000 http://blog.gkboptical.com/?p=1721 Continue reading "All About Orthokeratology"

]]>
Orthokeratology or ortho-k refers to the process of reshaping the eye with specially designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses. The major goal of ortho-k is to flatten the front surface of the eye and correct mild to moderate astigmatism and near-sightedness. This process is referred to as Corneal Reshaping. Conferring to the brand name Corneal Reshaping is also known as Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) and Bausch & Lomb Vision Shaping Treatment (VST).

Orthokeratology

How does Ortho-k works?

The GP lenses for ortho-k are applied during the bedtime and is worn over the night. The lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye that is the cornea to correct the vision while you are sleeping. This process makes it easy for you to see clearly without eyeglasses or contact lenses when you are awake. This effect is temporary – quite enough to get you through a day. Therefore, you must wear the reshaping lenses every night to maintain a better vision throughout the day.

Who Is an Apt Candidate for Ortho-k?

Orthokeratology is a satisfactory option for near sighted candidates who are eligible for LASIK surgery or who are not good candidates for vision correction surgery. This process can be discontinued at any time causing no permanent change to the eye. People of any age group can try the process, as long as their eyes are healthy.

Ortho-k is a procedure which is particularly appealing for the candidates who are into sports or work in dusty environment making it difficult for them to wear contact lens daily.

What Outcome Can You Expect from Ortho-k?

The major goal for ortho-k is to rectify the vision to 20/20 without taking the assistance of eyeglasses or contact lenses during the day. The success rate for ortho k tend to be on the higher limit for mild prescriptions. Contact GKB Opticals to find whether your prescribed power is within the range for successful treatment through ortho-k.

Orthokeratology

Generally, How Long Does Ortho-k Take?

Though you might visualise few improvements in vision after a day or two on undergoing overnight ortho-k, it might take several weeks for the full effect to be completely visible. At this juncture, your vision will not be as clear as it was on wearing eyeglasses or contacts, as you are likely to notice few glares around the light. Therefore, it is possible that you might require a temporary pair of eyeglass for a particular task, that might involve driving at night until your eye vision is completely corrected by the ortho-k lenses.

Is Ortho-k Congenial?

Few people undergo comfort issues on attempting to wear gas permeable contact lenses during the day time. But since ortho-k GP lenses can be worn during the sleep, most people usually do not counter an issue.

Is Orthokeratology Costly?

Ortho-k is a much longer process than a regular contact lens fitting. Ortho-k requires a series of office visits and multiple pairs of lenses. GP lenses that are utilized for ortho-k are more expensive than regular contact lenses. Therefore, the fees for ortho-k are higher in comparison to the fees for a regular contact lens fitting.

Can Someone Undergo LASIK After Orthokeratology?

Yes, it is 100% possible to undergo LASIK surgery after undergoing orthokeratology. Since orthokeratology reshapes the corneas, therefore you must stop wearing the lenses for a period of time (generally for several months) so that the condition of your eyes returns back to the original shape. Also, we at GKB Opticals recommend you to enlighten your LASIK surgeon that you have already worn ortho-k lenses, so as to incur the advice that how long should you wait before undergoing the surgery.

There are some eye problems that are usually harmless and get cured without much effort but when they seem to hurt and don’t seem to go away even after weeks, then there can be various problems that might be causing it. Eye stye can be an eye problem which becomes a trouble for you if you do not control it in time. A style is usually an oil gland which is infected with bacteria and fills up with pus and caused generally by staphylococcus bacteria.

If you have been facing problems with eye stye, then you should definitely check out these home remedies that can help you feel better.

Tip 1: Warm Cloth Compress

If your eye stye is not leaving or its returning over and over we suggest you try this tried and tested home remedy which uses simple technique to soothe your eyes. One of the best thing that happens when you use the warm compress technique is that the inflammation slowly starts to reduce, the circulation speeds up and rupture is believed to occur faster. The best technique to achieve this is to take a bowl of hot water and a clean hand towel or clean washcloth. Now, dip the towel or washcloth in hot water and wring out the excess. Now place the washcloth or towel over the infected eye. And repeat when the towel becomes cold again. You can continue this until the stye ruptures and pus starts coming out. Keep applying the compress to help all the pus to come out .

Tip 2: Use Coriander Seed Water

Coriander Seed water is one of the most common and age old technique to rescue and eliminate bacteria that cause eye styes. The trick is to make sure that you take a spoon of the coriander leaves and add it to boiling water. Once boiled for 5-10 minutes, drain the seeds and use the water to clean and wash the eyes every day three times until you see an improvement in the eye stye. In cases where there are two stye in eyes, use separate washcloth.

These tips along with proper eye care and proper hygiene ensure that eyes are not subjected to infections and styles in the future. If you continue getting stye over time, you must find out it you have blepharitis where your eyelids are inflamed and there are inflammation of the follicles in the eyelash.

Implantable lenses for Severe Myopic Patients http://blog.gkboptical.com/implantable-lenses-for-severe-myopic-patients/ http://blog.gkboptical.com/implantable-lenses-for-severe-myopic-patients/#respond Tue, 24 May 2016 12:15:43 +0000 http://blog.gkboptical.com/?p=1094 Continue reading "Implantable lenses for Severe Myopic Patients"

]]>
Have you been suffering from vision problems? If you have moderate or severe myopia that stops you from following everyday works. For severely myopic patients, not wearing glasses mean not being able to see at all, whatever the distance may be. Not only do severely nearsighted people rely on their glasses, but they constantly need them to see.

Many people solved their vision problem with laser eye treatments but having a thin corneas or are severely myopic are not able to get their eyes treated with LASIK. For this purpose the popularity of Implantable lenses has been increasing. Many people are looking up to implantable lenses as the best way to achieve better eyesight. There are two types of lenses available for this procedure.

The first ones is The Verisyse Phaktic Intraocular Lens (IOL) , which is made with plastic. This lens is attached to the front of the iris. Ideal participants for the implants should be above 21 years with a stable vision and a refraction change of less than .5 diopters in six months. The ideal candidate for the IOL implantation should have a nearsightedness range from -5 diopters to -20 diopters. It is usually not foldable which means it requires a larger incision. It is also closer to the inner surface of the cornea which means it can increase the risk of corneal damage.

The second one is the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens. The concept of Implantable Lenses is made of polymer substances that are similar to collagen. These lenses are safe and effective. These lenses are made with collamer which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Unlike the IOL lenses, these lenses are implanted behind the natural lens. These lenses are implanted for patients aged 21 to 45 years and with a refraction change with less than 0.5 diopters in a year. These lenses are available in two types, one that corrects myopia from -3 diopters to -16 diopters and another one that reduces myopia from -16 to -20 diopters. This lens is foldable and can be inserted through a fine incision and is placed close to the eye. Since the lens sits closer to the eye it can cause cataracts.

Now, there are ways in which you can help your vision and get improved vision. But since most types of severe nearsightedness is accompanied by astigmatism but none of these lenses treat astigmatism. There are a few phakic lenses which are known to treat myopia and astigmatism both .

How Computer Glasses Work – An Overview http://blog.gkboptical.com/how-computer-glasses-work-an-overview/ http://blog.gkboptical.com/how-computer-glasses-work-an-overview/#respond Thu, 24 Mar 2016 11:00:53 +0000 http://blog.gkboptical.com/?p=1020 Continue reading "How Computer Glasses Work – An Overview"

]]>
Computer glasses are special glasses that are designed to provide the eyes comfortable vision while working on digital devices like laptops and desktops. Advancement of technology has made computers and laptops a part of our daily life and has become inevitable at our workstations too.

Computer glasses are mostly designed to eliminate the harsh lights emitted from the backlit screens used in digital devices such as desktops, laptops, tabs and mobile phones. Every day while we are busy at working on the digital screens or mobiles we don’t feel that we’re causing discomfort for our eyes. Eyes are really active organs which constantly work to provide us the clearest vision and give our brains the information to work properly.

When we work on digital screens we force our eyes to readjust focus on what’s in front constantly. When we shift from pictures to text our eyes quickly adjust focus to keep the text in focus. Our eyes also keep adjusting the focus while we shift between the keyboard and screen. Also improper lighting can aggravate the problem.

The main problem for people working on digital devices for extended period is the aftereffects and eye problems faced while working. The most common symptoms of eye problem resulting from use of computers and digital devices are known as Computer Vision Syndrome or CVS.

The main problems experienced in CVS headaches after using digital devices, blurry vision, neck pain , eye strain, eye redness, fatigue, dry eyes, irritation in the eyes, vertigo or dizziness, double vision, polyopia and problems in refocusing the eyes.

The scary fact is that National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has shared their findings that about 90% users, who spend 3+ hours before a computer, will face some symptoms of CVS. One of the main problems faced during using a digital device is the reflections and excessive blue-violet lights. Also when we read our eyes blink fewer times, causing straining in our eyes and also causing dry eyes. So, it’s really important that one uses some kind of eye protection to reduce the eye problems associated with computer vision syndrome.

The Best way to reduce eye problems and increase your chances of keeping your eyes unaffected from the harsh lights from computer screens, computer glasses are the best solutions. Computer glasses are really useful to keep eyes more relaxed and feeling easy while you work on the computer. These glasses are specially tinted to reduce the amount of light passing to your eyes which reduces the eye fatigue. Also computer glasses come with an anti glare coating which is said to reduce the unnecessary reflections and block excessive lights, also causing eyes to feel more relaxed.

Computer glasses are formulated to block and reduce the amount of light that enters our eyes. Blue light focuses in front of the retina and forces our eyes to constantly shift it’s focus to keep the object/ text/ image in front in focus. This makes it tough for our eyes to keep up and causes fatigue. So, wearing a specially crafted computer glass eliminates the constant need to keep focusing and reduces fatigue.

So if you’re spending more than three hours in-front of a computer or digital screen opt for computer glasses and reduce your eye straining and fatigue.

Tips for Protecting Your Glasses http://blog.gkboptical.com/tips-for-protecting-your-glasses/ http://blog.gkboptical.com/tips-for-protecting-your-glasses/#respond Tue, 08 Mar 2016 10:42:48 +0000 http://blog.gkboptical.com/?p=1008 Continue reading "Tips for Protecting Your Glasses"

]]>
Your glasses are important and whether or not you wear them daily, it’s required that you keep them safe. Eyeglasses can wear off with regular wear and tear and both the Eyeframes and lenses can get damaged with regular use. Lenses can get scratched with regular usage from things like clothes, dust etc and from other mishaps. Also if not stored properly it can get scratched from foreign objects which are stored together. This makes it important to keep it safe throughout the day.

Here are the steps you should take to keep your glasses protected everyday.

tips-to-protect-your-glasses

Step 1: Keep Your Glasses in A Case

We all know that keeping spectacles open or in a space where it can come in contact with sharp objects is not at all advisable, but we mostly disregard this. Sometimes we keep spectacles in bags or purses or in pockets, forcing them to get scratched by items like keys, coins, pens and many more things. IF you wear polycarbonate lenses with coatings, this will make visible scratches on your lens surface and damage your lenses over time. Scratches damage the coatings like UV coatings, dust free or water resistance coatings and create disturbing scratches on the surface. Glass lenses show more resistance to scratches but nonetheless keeping them safe in a box is required. Always use spectacle cases for your eyeglasses when they’re not in use.

Step 2: Clean properly

Another mistake that most spectacle wearers make is not using appropriate cleaning solutions and soft cloth for cleaning lenses. Everyone has at least once used their clothing’s to clean their glasses on the go, since they got soiled or needed immediate cleaning. But lenses can get damaged when proper cleaning solutions or cleaning cloth is not used. It’s advised to use either lint free clothes or microfiber cloth to clean the lenses.

Also use proper solutions for cleaning the lenses like lens cleaning solutions meant to be used for lens cleaning. Or use plain water to wipe off the dust particles in running water and wipe gently with a microfiber cloth.

Step 3: Know When to Replace your Lens or Frame:

It’s necessary that you know when to replace your lenses or frame. Lenses and frame both get worn out with regular use and it’s necessary that you know when to replace your lenses. The time to change your lenses can be when your lenses get scratched too much or if they start developing cracks. Sometimes your visit to the doctor might indicate that your prescription has changed. For spectacles frames, when your frames show signs of damage like peeling, or breaking of parts, or damage to the nose bridge or the temples, you might want to get a new pair as soon as possible.

It’s easy to change your lenses or frames; you can do it at a shop or buy it online. For online purchases, you can choose www.gkboptical.com and choose from a wide variety of 1450+ frame designs and many lens packages to suit your needs and budget. You can choose from designer Eyeframes or simple affordable eyeglass frames whichever your requirement is. You can also choose between full rimmed, half rimmed or rimless Eyeframes depending on your face shape or the look you personally prefer.

You can get rimless frames if you’re looking for a clean look where your glasses create the least obstructions. These frames also are quite weightless so you’ll feel as if your spectacles have lost weight. Rimmed frames offer a change in your look and give you a more polished professional look. Whereas full rimmed frames help to give you a differen look altogether.

No matter what frames or lenses you get, it’s important to get scratch resistant lenses to reduce lens damage. Also don’t take your glasses near high heat or very low temperatures where it can function properly. So these are some ways by which you can make your eyeglasses stay in great shape for a longer period.
